Eating While Traveling — Staying Healthy?

As you know, I’ve been on the road for about 10 days now. I stuck to my eating plan pretty well for the first week, and I’m rather proud of myself for that.

However, my good intentions fell apart on Friday evening.

We arrived, as planned, at the home of an elderly relative in time for dinner. Always a superb cook, he had asked me on the phone whether there were any foods I couldn’t or shouldn’t eat. I explained that I was avoiding wheat and gluten.

Sadly, it was obvious that he is no longer as sharp mentally as he always has been. He asked the same questions over and over, and worried — a lot — about things that would seem trivial to most of us. Always active and extremely social, he was polite but withdrawn and unengaged in the conversation.

The meal he had prepared included canned peas and pasta — the former something I would never voluntarily eat and the latter something I would normally avoid. It finished up with dessert consisting of cake from the freezer section of the grocery store and ice cream.

I didn’t have the heart to do anything except sit down and eat.

Saturday night I had dinner at his house again, after moving my daughter into her college dorm during the day. This menu again included foods I would not normally consume, and again I just quietly ate what was put in front of me.

In the overall scheme of things, I’ve spent a large part of my life making less-than-healthy food choices. Two terrible meals will not make a huge difference to my healing, as long as I get back to healthful eating right away. However, making a fuss would have been cruel to a family member I care about.

After leaving Boston, I ate much better, including a wonderful New England seacoast-style dinner of boiled lobster, steak tips and grilled vegetables at my older daughter’s. And, as promised, I did have a dessert. . . and was it ever good!

I’m at my son’s tonight, and he’s planning a feast from the grill that I’m very much looking forward to.
