Hi Lynne,

I can't get super-specific because I signed a non-disclosure agreement before the start of the beta program. Once the book is released I can say anything, but by then I won't need to because the book will be out :-)

The recommendation is to eliminate caffeine completely for several weeks as you want to give your metabolism a chance to reset. However, green tea is acceptable. The reason for eliminating dairy and gluten is because they are major allergens and sources of inflammation. After you've completely cleaned out your system, you can start adding them back in small amounts, gradually, to see whether you tolerate them. I was surprised to find that I don't tolerate dairy very well -- I really hadn't thought it was a problem for me. You eliminate sugar because you want to be eating foods with a low glycemic load.

I used to drink tea with milk and forced myself to cut out the milk years ago. Then I eliminated the sweetener as well. (Artificial sweeteners create problems too.) During the total no-dairy part of this program, I just stopped drinking coffee. Now I've started drinking it (decaf only) with almond milk, which probably isn't available to you where you are. It's not the same as drinking it with milk or cream, for sure.

Hope this helps a little.

I decided to try this and immediately came up against a problem. Can you help? We have no indoor heat other than space heaters in the country where I live as an expat. I found I drink coffee with some milk(either with or without caffiene, and with artificial sweetener) several times during the day. I realized I cannot drink that now as both coffee and milk are off the list. So I immediately thought of hot chocolate, but then realized there are no cocoa powders sold in this country that do not contain sugar already in the mix (same with chocolate bars, even baking bars here do contain some sugar). Futhermore I don't think I could stand it just mixed into water without some milk. Even tea I put a little milk into because I can't stand it without it. So this morning I've just been drinking plain hot water, but I don't think I can stick to that. What hot drinks are allowed on this program besides water and tea?

How strict do you have to be on this program? Do you have to cut out all four things (wheat, dairy, sugar and coffee ENTIRELY) or does having just a little bit keep it from working? Or is the problem in controlling quantities if you allow yourself to have a little (I could imagine easily having this problem). Any thoughts?

Hey, fellow Third Tribe member/alum! Good to see you posting again.

Derailed? You betcha. Lost a pretty significant amount of weight about four years ago, kept it off pretty well for two years, but the last two years have seen me gain about half of that back.

So, the original eating/exercise plan from four years ago is back in force. For those two years I kept the weight off, I noticed that, as long as I maintained that "schedule" about eight days out of ten, I stayed pretty stable.

It's developing the habit that's difficult.

(Keep posting!)

Great article!! I'm just learning about the dangers in our products, and it's really scary! Ava Anderson Non-Toxic is one of the highest rated (if not THE highest rated) personal care product companies on the EWG database. Almost all of their products rate "0". The make skin care, hair care, makeup, lotions, and sunscreen -- all WITHOUT harmful chemicals. And they work great! Feel free to contact me for more information.

Thanks for the advice and link, Susanna. I've taken a quick look, and I'm fascinated by the UltraSimple Diet. I'll definitely have to take more time later and read about your experience with it.

Welcome, Ami, and thanks for your comment. I've been enjoying A-list as well. :-)

One thing I've learned is that you can't really begin to lose weight until you deal with inflammation and toxicity. The 7-day UltraSimple Diet, the subject of many posts here, talks extensively about both of those. Here's a link to all of those posts. Once you're free of inflammation and are less toxic, weight loss occurs much more easily!!!

Wow, Susanna! I'm so happy I found your site (via A-List Blogging). I've enjoyed what I've read, and I'm excited about following your journey towards health.

I too am obese, thought not (yet!) diabetic. And taking the weight off is so difficult. I'd like to hear all the advice I can get from someone who's actually dealing with the problem, rather than "coaches" and "experts" who really don't have first-hand experience with obesity.

I'm definitely coming back for more...and I'm guaranteed no weight gain on "seconds" for this one! Yay!

Good luck!
